Q1: Please tell us a little bit about what you are doing here in Guangdong.

A1: I’ve been here in Guangzhou since 2013, traveling back and forth since 2010 for my previous job with an International bank called HSBC. I’ve since decided to leave my corporate role and set up a coaching company in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, while Guangzhou is where I call home. Amongst coaching individuals and companies, I am learning to re-integrate myself back into the British Community in Guangzhou, as a British born Chinese to help where I can on both sides of the community.

Q2: What was it that brought you to China? Did you have any connections with China before coming here?

A2: Work initially brought me to China, or should I say back to China – I elected my post to China at a time when many expats in Banking felt that Guangdong was still a backwater province for Finance. The reason why I say ‘back’ to China is because my Chinese name‘家华’was my mother’s way of telling me that home is in China,‘家是在大中华’–as a Child I didn’t know what this meant, and even as an adult I did not feel a pull toward China. After arriving, I felt this inner feeling that compelled me to stay. My mother herself is from Shenzhen, and my father was from Hong Kong, which means I have a powerful connection with the Greater Bay Area.

Q3: You are the founder and CEO of Wilosophy Ltd, a registered Hong Kong coaching company. When you think of “coaching,” the first thing that comes to mind is sports. However, you do coaching of a different kind. Can you tell us a little more about that?

A3: It’s a question I get asked quite a lot in China, not so much in the west and in places like Hong Kong where culturally coaching is a concept that is used in Business and widely accepted as an investment toolkit for talent. Coaching in sport is very common, I use the concept of football, where football managers are now being re-branded as football coaches – as coaches get the best out of people; they don’t necessarily have to be experts in the field of the coachee. Jurgen Klopp (yes I’m a Liverpool fan) is a great coach, and I would suspect he could boost and find the potential of most individuals; however, he happens to ply his trade in football. Not everyone needs a coach, and not everyone is ready to be coached, it’s very personal to the individual – many people ask me to coach them, but most often than not, they need a mentor, an expert in a field to provide advice and guidance. A coach does not do this; coaches help individuals realize & fulfill their potential through meaningful and action based conversations. However, I also do provide mentorship to many - ladies in LeanIn GZ, Universities, and I recently started a program for teenage mentoring for expat children.

Q4: I know you used to work in banking, but made the switch to coaching. What spurred on that decision?

A4: Ironically, I had my own executive coach in my last role, and through those conversations, I realized that I also wanted to be a coach myself. Those discussions helped me see that since starting to coach internally with HSBC from 2008, my most important sense of achievement throughout the years weren’t the projects or profits, but building teams and seeing the smiles of individuals realizing that “they could do it.” I also really enjoyed interacting with people, listening, and being authentically curious with helping – I would even say I have a rescuer mentality, which leans towards having the right foundations for coaching. Also, I found that I wasn’t passionate about working in banking; I didn’t look forward to going to work as much as I used to. The only thing pulling me towards the end of my role was ensuring that the talent program was working and that the nurseries for the working mothers were on track; the very last meeting before handing in my staff pass on 29 Sept 2017 was with the HKMA, China CBRC, UK PRA and the China COO with my Global Head … if that sounds boring and uninspiring, then ’exactly!’.

Q5: Your mission statement is “to discover a better self through experience and choice.” As a life coach, do you have any tips for how people can make small changes in their lives to see significant results and changes?

A5: Just as a child takes his/her first step when walking, they will learn and grow from each step & failure, eventually finding a balance. As a toddler, we never used to be constrained to fear, and that curious nature seems to be eroded by conformity and fear of judgment/failure/embarrassment. A small change in the mindset of what we need to do to know if we can do something and not care about judgment is a tiny tweak but would be a massive boost in making a difference to one’s self. Finding someone to talk to openly about what you want to achieve in terms of a goal or even direction, then making small achievable steps to reach it will provide lots of confidence. Getting runs on the board will provide confidence and momentum; many business models already adopt this psychology, yet many don’t apply this to themselves – because ultimately, there could be a potential negative cost. (Yes, that last string of words was supposed to be vague and unsubstantial).
